RE: How to handle non-RV family that want to borrow your MH?

The answer to their request would be a resounding NO. If they persisted, I would then ask them what part of no don't you understand. I can't help but believe that liability issuses would/could come into play if they ever hit someone else.:S

RE: roof putty tape

I really need to re-seal all roof openings after 1 year? As sad as it may seem the quality of some things used in RV's leaves much to be desired. One of the consistant maintenance problems with all RV's is that the caulking used on the roof sometimes requires frequent monitoring. I pretty much eliminated this by replacing the roof caulk with a product called Eternabond Tape. If the caulking is not in to bad of shape, the tape can be applied over top and will pretty much eliminate having to do frequent recaulking. If you do have to remove the caulk, using a heatgun on low setting and a small putty knife will do the trick. Here is a link to the most economical site I have found for purchasing the tape along with butyl tape which is used under windows, roof vents. You should also consider getting a small wooden/metal roller to apply pressure after installing the tape. http://www.bestmaterials.com/roof_repair.aspx In the event you decide to use Eternabond Tape and do an oops, here is another link with instructions on how to remove it.http://www.eternabond.com/bulletin/eternabond_remove.htm It's not that bad of a job and will result in less future worries. Unless all of the caulking is bad, I would start by repairing the existing one with tape and do the others a little at a time. You DON'T want water to get in under the roof!:( I would recommend the 4"x50' roll of the white or grey which should run around $50 but they might have a 25' roll also.

RE: Diesel Fuel Additives

Hi all, We are about to buy our first RV, a Winnebago Journey DP. I have never owned a diesel before and was wondering what diesel fuel additives I should use. I live in Maine and it soon will be cold, at what temperature do I have to add an antigel and does anyone have a particular antigel that they really like? Any and all information and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jackha Although our current MH is a gasser(8.1), I have owned various diesel vehicles in the past and have used the following products/ratios with good results: 1. Power Service(White Bottle-Winter/Cold Weather-Has anti-gel)-8oz mixed with 4oz Marvel Mystery Oil per 25-35 gal of diesel fuel every 1-2 tanks. 2. Power Service(Gray Bottle-Warmer weather-has Cetane booster)-8oz mixed with 4oz MMO per 25-35 gal od diesel fuel every 1-2 tanks. 3. Seafoam once in the spring and maybe fall. (1) bottle per 25-35 gals of diesel fuel. I also use this stuff in other gas powered items,(boat motor, lawn mower, gas trimmer usually in the spring to blow out the winter "doldrums". 4. Like a previous poster has stated, a good biocide if your rig will be sitting over a month is also recommended. Walmart and Advanced Auto Parts are (2) places that come to mind for purchasing. My vehicles always ran noticeably quieter and smoother when I used these products.:)

RE: Engine cover heat Winnebago Sightseer

Seriously considering a 29 ft Winnebago Sightseer to replace our class C. Class C are famous for high heat from engine cover, which I have greatly reduced. Is this an issue with the Sightseer? If so, is there anything that I can have dealer do prior to delivery ie upgrades/modifications? Several RVr's that I know, myself included, have installed foil backed insulation on the underside of the "Doghouse Cover" for any possible heat radiant problems and to reduce the noise level. Here is where some of us purchased the insulation.http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=DYC%2D11905&N=700+115&autoview=sku A little pricey but well worth it. Here is a good link on another forum describing what others have done.http://irv2.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/2486094452/m/5101040033?r=5101040033#5101040033

RE: Sharp Microwave/Convection Oven

I have a Sharp Carousel Mic/Con Oven in my 2004 HR and have started having problems with it. When I cook anything in it and put in the time it will automatically cut off after 59 seconds, does not matter how long I time it for it cuts off every 59 seconds. Has anyone else had this type of problem and if so what was the fix. Thanks. This is a somewhat frequent problem and has been discussed before. We had the 59 second problem last fall and it was caused by a bad dampner motor and is repairable. Here is a link on this forum of previous discussions.http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseaction/search/parms/sw%7Bsharp%20micro%7D%7Ckm%7Bexact%7D%7Ckl%7Bm%7D%7Cfm%7B%7D%7Cpd%7B365%7D%7Cma%7B%7D/sr/1.cfm and another forum discussion at this link http://irv2.infopop.cc/eve/forums?a=search&reqWords=sharp+micro and here http://www.fixya.com/support/t127466-shuts_down_after_59_sec Been there, done that.:R We were fortunate in that Sharp footed the bill but I had to remove the unit and take it to an authorized repair cent. If memory serves me correct, the cost would have been about $100-150. Haven't had any problems since.

RE: Changing brake fluid

I did a search on DIY brake fluid. On person enlisted the help of another to force the fluid through the system. One person let it flow through, gravity. Is there any better methods to changing the fluid by your self? Type of fluid recommended for 96 Ford F 53? Horace Goe to OEMY's website for instructions on how to gravity bleed your brakes. http://oemys-performance.com/techtips.htm#gravity

RE: I like to hear your opinion

Hi everyone, my name is Norman and I have subscribed to this forum a couple of years ago. During that time I thought about buying a camper but I never did. Now I have the possibility to do it and I'm seriously considering to do it. I have done a lot of camping growing up with my parents, first in a tent, then on a pop-up and finally on a TT. Anyway, I have the chance to get a 22' class A Fleetwood Flair 1991 that has 86K. I have seen the MH and it looks in great condition and is well kept. It's owned by an older (retired) couple that just bought a 2005 MH. They are offering me this MH for $7,500, I think I can get it for $7,250. Originally they were asking $8,570. Is only my wife and I that will be using the MH and I think starting with something small would be the best. I guess there is always time to upgrade for something bigger in the future. According to the owner it gets about 8.5 mpg. Anyway, I would like to hear your opinion guys. Is this a good price? I checked with the NADA and it seems to be what it shows there. Has anybody heard or have this type of MH? I like to hear what you have to say. I have never gone camping here and never owned a MH, but I know I would love to do it. I'll be looking for your opinions, thank you in advance to everyone. Norman and Julie.:) As with any major purchase, you should approach it with as much knowledge as possible. The price seems reasonable for 17 yr old unit but you should be advised that the major components need to be checked very carefully as any one of them can be very expensive to repair/replace. I have attached a link which has an inspection sheet you can download. It has a very extensive list of things that should be inspected when buying a used RV. When looking at the list, not all things to check will apply. If it were me, I would be particularily interested in: 1. The engine condition and service records. Any oil usuage. Antifreeze coolant level/age. 2. Tires(Anything with obvious wear, etc or older than 6-7 yrs should be replaced. 3. The vehicles dash ac if applicable 4. The ac/furnace of the MH.(Do they work? How Old?) 5. The MH fridge.(Does it work on all phases-LP/AC) 6. Inside electrical lights/plugs. 7. Freshwater tank, grey water tank, black water tank, water pump in working condition. 8. MH suspension 9. Generator if equipped in working condition. 10. Any history/visible signs of water damage. 11. Roof type/condition/Roof vent(s) condition. As another poster has stated, do drive the unit for 1/2-1 hr. Here is the link for downloading the checklist.Used RV Checklist This may seem like a lot of work but if it checks out to what you feel comfortable with, you and your bride will be starting out on a very enjoyable adventure of RVing.:C Don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions. Here is another forum board that also has very knowledgeable members. It's free to join.http://www.irv2.com/

RE: Extended service contract

As I've stated before, extended contracts are made for the benefit of the providers, not us. My recommendation has always been to figure what the monthly cost for the so-called extended warranty would be and take the same amont and put it away in a savings account every month to cover any possible future repairs.:W

RE: Brazel's Ultrapower Performance Tuning

We had the UltraPower Upgrade done to our MH last year and I can say that it was money well spent. I noticed more power and an increase in MPG from 7.5 to consistently 8.0 when running 60-65 MPH. In addition, I would recommend replacing the OEM spark plugs with AC 41-932 if available or AC 41-993 and gap them to .045. Replace the OEM plug wires with Taylor 409 Spark Plug Wires. A very good website to read up on this info can been obtained at this link. http://oemys-performance.com/index.htm(Good site, promtp shipping, reasonable prices) The UP Upgrade will be less than $1000 whereas the Banks Kits usually run $2000-3000. The only reason that I have the Banks Kit on our MH is that it was installed by the originally owner. I would be interested to know the performance of your MH prior to having the Banks installed and since you had Ultrapower installed in addition to the Banks. At first blush, it seems like a little overkill to me. I guess my question is why both Banks and the Ultra system? The Banks Kit had been installed by the original owner before we bought the MH. I personally would not have spent that kind of money on Banks as I believe the UltraPower will give you as much/possibly more then the Banks at substantially less cost. I can only comment on the MPG before the UltraPower and it was in the low/mid 7's. The performance boost was very noticeable after the UltraPower install. Here is a lenthy discussion of UltraPower on another Forum. As far as MPG increase, I'm happy with the increase I've seen considering the size of these motor homes and their weight. http://irv2.infopop.cc/eve/forums?a=search&reqWords=ultrapower

RE: I Need More Power!

Go to Brazel's RV and look at UltraPower ad save about $2200 and get more HP/TQ with no physical changes. I agree 100% with OEMTECH. We have been through the Colorado Mts with our rig and other then the altitude effecting the engine performance, our rig ran acceptable. The UltraPower is very affordable and will do as much as and sometimes more than the $3000 Banks kit. The only reason we have the Banks on our rig is it was installed by the original owner. Here's is a link to Brazel's website for UltraPower info. http://www.brazelsrv.com/
